Hmm, vertical clearance above chart datum, methinks. (I don't know this for certain, but it sure looks like that feature (D20) in the Admiralty NP5011 Symbols & Abbreviations book). See ya in class next week. :-)
Thank-you! That makes perfect sense. There's an example on the RYA3 chart, a bridge over the river running into S. Kilda Bay on the east coast of the Southern Peninsula, marked just like that.

Beg pardon, I should have said "above height datum", not "chart datum" (an interesting 'gotcha' for an exam question).
