double trouble

A weekend full of gigs, so for my sailing fix I had to content myself with racing around the cans on Sunday. I'd originally planned to sail the Laser, but one of the sailors from the club's Cadet fleet was very keen to race the Albacore with me again, so I left the Laser under her covers and we rigged the double-hander.

Young Alex is twelve years old, exceptionally keen, and weighs about 40kg when wet. We'd already sailed together the previous Wednesday, so he was familiar with the boat, but Wednesday evening the conditions were quite light.

So when the squall came through at 1140hrs on Sunday and caught us on the beat, complete with driving rain and gusting 20 knots, the next ten minutes or so were just a little bit challenging.

But very good fun.

Turns out it's very easy to get the Albacore up onto the plane once you survive the beat and turn the windward mark, when you have a combined crew weight of just shy of 110kgs.

Two more gigs this weekend coming, festivals in Tewkesbury and Malvern respectively, so not our usual pub scene, then next weekend is the beginning of two week's leave. I intend to go sailing.

The photo at the top is, of course, my Lottie and Boo, on one of our usual evening walks in the park out the back of my house last week. It's been a very dry summer.
